The Challenge

Nature Reliance School has spent decades building one of the most trusted names in wilderness survival and tracking education. Founder Craig Caudill has taught for more than forty years, written eight books, and appeared on the History Channel, BBC, and Discovery. Since 2006, the school has trained over 10,000 students.

None of that came through on the website.

The problem wasn't a lack of content—it was that the content lived everywhere at once. In-person classes, online training memberships, gear, and books had each been bolted on over time, in different systems with different visual languages. Students who came for a tracking course had no obvious path to the online library. Customers who bought a knife had no idea the school existed. The site read as a hodgepodge, which is a hard thing to be when your entire value proposition is expertise.

The Prototype Was the Spec

We didn't start by designing. We started by giving Claude Code the Be Yours theme documentation—every section the theme ships with, and every setting each one exposes.

That ordering is the whole trick. A concept that doesn't know its build target produces beautiful things nobody can implement on budget. Working from the section inventory, the design could only propose what the theme could actually deliver.

From there we generated the site on atomic design principles: color, type scale, spacing, and iconography as the base layer; buttons and cards composed from those; headers, image treatments, and full section patterns composed from those. Eight complete page concepts came out of a single working session—homepage, about, classes, online training, store, product detail, blog listing, and blog post—plus a style guide defining the system behind them, built on a palette of Forest, Sand, Ember, and Gold with Plus Jakarta Sans throughout.

The most valuable page in that style guide was the last one. It mapped every design element to its Be Yours counterpart—announcement bar, header, slideshow, featured collection, testimonials, newsletter—with implementation notes for each, and flagged the handful of patterns that would need custom Liquid instead of a theme setting.

So before the proposal went out, the prototype had already sorted its own build into configuration versus code. Very little landed in the second column.

That is why the estimate held across a five-month build, and why a developer could pick up a task that read only "Build Membership page from approved design" and ship it. The approved design already carried the tokens, the components, the theme section, and the build risk.

What We Built

With the concepts signed off, the build converted them into a live Shopify storefront on the Be Yours theme:

  • Theme foundation — Brand color system and typography, sticky global header with search, account, and cart, announcement bar, four-column footer, and newsletter integration
  • Homepage — Full-height hero with trust proof, bento-style pathway cards routing visitors to in-person training, online learning, or the store, featured products, instructor section, upcoming classes, testimonials, and books
  • Five interior templates — About, Classes with category filters and availability badges, Online Training with membership tiers, Blog listing, and Blog post with author box and related posts
  • Store and product pages — Collection page with category bar, sort, and grid/list toggle; product detail with image gallery, variant selector, tabs, trust badges, and related products
  • Catalog — Initial product entry across the signature gear line, apparel, and books

Launch Preparation

A redesign that loses the search visibility of the site it replaced isn't a redesign, it's a setback. Before going live we handled the unglamorous half of the job: base SEO setup with meta titles, descriptions, sitemap, and robots.txt; GA4 and Google Search Console configuration; mobile responsiveness QA across devices; image compression and lazy loading; domain and DNS connection; and 301 redirects mapping the old URL structure onto the new one.

Why the Two-Phase Structure Worked

The project ran in two phases with a client review checkpoint between them—theme setup and homepage first, then interior pages, store, and launch.

The checkpoint mattered more than the sequencing did. Craig reviewed real pages on a live preview theme and came back with page-by-page notes: a statistic that needed rewording, a credential that didn't apply, a class calendar that was pulling the wrong dates. Some of those were corrections only the client could catch. Getting them before the store was fully built meant fixing them once, in the right place, instead of hunting them across eight templates after launch.

The Result

Nature Reliance School now runs on one platform. A visitor who arrives for a free survival course can find a class in Kentucky, subscribe to the online library, buy the knife the instructor recommends, and pick up the book—without leaving the site or encountering a different brand halfway through.

The expertise was always there. The site finally shows it.

From Concept to Shipped

Three homepage screenshots side by side: the old Nature Reliance School store on a stock theme, the AI-generated March 2026 concept, and the shipped Shopify site — the concept and shipped versions sharing the same hero, trust strip, and pathway card layout
The concept generated on March 31 and the site that shipped five months later share the same structure. Everything that changed between them was a fact or a photo—the as-seen-on credits, the class photography, a line of hero copy—not a layout decision.
